Anyone fishing in Schleswig-Holstein must possess and carry a valid fishing license. The fishing license is issued for life in Schleswig-Holstein. The prerequisite for the issue of a fishing license is the successful completion of a fishing license examination or the existence of circumstances that make it unnecessary to take the examination. Valid fishing licenses from other federal states can be transferred after a change of main residence (when moving). Children who have not yet reached the age of 12 cannot yet obtain a fishing license. However, they may fish if they are supervised by a fishing license holder.
Valid fishing licenses from other federal states are recognized in Schleswig-Holstein. However, their holders must also pay the fishing tax of the state of Schleswig-Holstein - regardless of how and where the fishing is to be carried out. The tax stamp must be affixed to a supplementary certificate, which can be obtained from all stamp issuing offices or downloaded free of charge from the website of the responsible Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Areas, Europe and Consumer Protection (MLLEV). The supplementary certificate is not an official document and can therefore be filled out by yourself; a personal presence at an authority is not required.

For fishing in inland waters and in certain coastal waters that are subject to an independent fishing right (Eider, Schlei, Lübeck Bay), a permit from the respective fishing right holder is also required. Apart from the exceptions mentioned above, there is free fishing in the coastal waters of Schleswig-Holstein.

In Schleswig-Holstein, there are exemptions from the fishing license requirement based on Section 5 of the State Ordinance on the Implementation of the Fishing Act for the State of Schleswig-Holstein (LFischG-DVO). The most frequently used exemption option is the so-called "vacation fishing license", which can be applied for by any natural person (valid for 28 consecutive days, can be extended once per calendar year). The vacation fishing license and the renewal each cost a 10.00 euro administration fee; in addition, the fishing tax (once per calendar year) must also be paid here.

Since July 15, 2013, no fishing license is required for commercial fishing ponds and commercial fishing boats if the commercial provider can ensure compliance with animal welfare and fishing regulations by means of supervision (note - optional provision, please contact the respective provider). However, the fishing tax must also be paid in these cases!

In addition, there is the possibility of a temporary exemption from the fishing license requirement for special cases (e.g. for special events of charitable institutions, for international events, etc.), which must be applied for and justified in writing to the higher fishing authority in individual cases.

Persons with disabilities who are unable to take a fishing license examination can apply to the higher fishing authority for an unlimited exemption that entitles them to fish accompanied by an adult fishing license holder.
