The residence permit for the purpose of school-based vocational training is a temporary residence permit. If your vocational training extends beyond the duration of the residence permit, you can apply for an extension of the residence permit.

To extend your residence permit for the purpose of school-based vocational training, you must meet the same requirements as when you first applied.

Your residence permit will then be extended for the expected duration of the training.

An extension is not possible if the immigration authority has already ruled this out when issuing the permit or the last extension.

During qualified vocational training, you may work up to 20 hours per week in an occupation that is independent of your vocational training. Self-employment is not permitted.

This is qualified vocational training,

• if the vocational training is recognized by the state or is a comparable regulated training occupation and
• if a training period of at least 2 years is stipulated by federal or state law.

If your qualified vocational training ends prematurely for reasons for which you are not responsible, you do not have to leave Germany immediately. You can look for another training place in Germany for up to 6 months.
