Apply for recognition as a Designated Body (BSt)

Source: Zuständigkeitsfinder Schleswig-Holstein (Linie6PLus)

Service Description

If your company is active in the railroad sector and would like to work as a so-called conformity assessment body, it needs to be recognized as a notified body by the Federal Railway Authority (EBA).

Do you want to operate as a conformity assessment body in the railroad sector? Then you must be recognized by the Federal Railway Authority (EBA) as a Designated Body (BSt). In your application, you can also limit yourself to a selection of the areas of activity and expertise listed below.

BSt are conformity assessment bodies. On application, these bodies check products and processes, for example, to see whether they meet the requirements contained in the notified national regulations. All components of a railroad system must be designed in such a way that safe train traffic is guaranteed in Germany. In addition, vehicles must be compatible with the route on which they operate.

Designated body (BSt)

Designated bodies are conformity assessment bodies appointed by the state. They check whether the notified national regulations, which apply in addition to the European Technical Specifications for Interoperability (TSI), are complied with. The result of this examination is a test certificate in accordance with the notified national technical regulations (NNTV).

The tasks of a conformity assessment include testing, inspection, evaluation and certification decisions. The tests concern, among other things, components and component groups on which the interoperability of the rail system depends and which are necessary, for example, in the following areas:

  • Infrastructure,
    • e.g. tracks, switches, level crossings, bridges, tunnels, stations, safety and protective equipment.
  • Trackside and on-board train control or train protection and signaling.
  • Vehicles,
    • for example, vehicle body structure, current collection devices, traction and energy conversion devices, braking systems, couplings, bogies, axles, doors.

Recognition as a BSt

Recognition as a BSt is valid for a maximum of 5 years. It can be extended for a further 5 years at a time and is published by the EBA both on the EBA website and via the European Railway Agency (ERA) in the reference document database (RDD).

Recognized BSts are regularly monitored by the EBA.
