Aerial photographs are a photographic image of the landscape. They show a real picture of all objects visible from a bird's-eye view at the time of the photograph, such as the transport network, the buildings, the waters and the vegetation, thus providing images of high information density.

Because of the special imaging conditions (central perspective), an aerial image, unlike a map, does not have an exactly uniform scale. In the photographic image from the air, the height differences in the terrain result in positional deviations, which increase sharply towards the edge of the image. Through computational equalization and image processing, the original aerial images create digital orthophotos that map the earth's surface to scale like a map.

Orthophotos can be used in numerous areas as an exact source of information and as a basis for the collection and presentation of thematic facts. Like the original aerial images, they are available as analogue products or as digital data.
