Request information from the National Weapons Register

Service Description

The National Weapons Register stores all important information on privately and commercially owned firearms requiring a licence. The aim is, among other things, to be able to check quickly for each firearm requiring a licence,

  • who is the current owner of the weapon,
  • since when he has owned the weapon,
  • where and from whom it was acquired, and
  • how the life cycle of the weapon has progressed.

If you are a natural person in possession of a firearms permit or a firearm, you can request information about what data is stored about you in the register. Stored data can be:

  • Data on the weapons authority from which you have received permission to own/carry your weapon. These are for example
    • Name and
    • address.
  • Data about you as the person in possession. This is for example:
    • Name,
    • address,
    • date of birth,
    • place of birth and
    • nationality.
  • Data on your firearms permit, for example, to/for the
    • Permit type
    • Permit validity
    • Permit status
  • Data on your weapon. These are for example:
    • manufacturer name,
    • model,
    • weapon category and
    • caliber designation.
  • Data on your weapon part. These are for example:
    • Manufacturer name,
    • model,
    • weapon part category and
    • Essential weapon part

You submit your application in writing, online or in person to the Federal Office of Administration (BVA).


Process flow

You can apply for information from the National Weapons Register in writing, online or in person. You can submit the written request by mail or in person at the Federal Bureau of Administration (BVA).
Written application:

  • Go to the BVA's website and fill out the application form for affected person information electronically.
  • Print out the completed form and sign it.
  • Send the completed and signed form together with the certification of the identity card or the certified signature and, if applicable, other requested documents by mail to the BVA.
  • The BVA will review your application.
  • Once the review of your application is complete, the BVA will send you the information about the stored data by mail.

Online Application:

  • Go to the website of the federal portal and fill out the application form for data subject information electronically.
    • Note: For the online function you need your identity card with PIN number.
  • Attach the other requested documents as a scan.
  • Send your application.
  • The BVA will check your application.
  • Once the review of your application is complete, the BVA will send you the information about the stored data by mail.

Submitting your application in person:

  • Go to the BVA's website and fill out the data subject information request form electronically.
  • Print out the completed form and sign it.
  • Attach all other requested documents.
  • You can submit your completed application in person to the BVA in Cologne. You must then take your valid identity document with you.
  • The BVA will review your application.
  • After the examination of your application has been completed, the BVA will send you the information about the stored data by post.

Which documents are required?

At the time of application, you must submit:

  • Proof of identity by:
    • an officially certified copy of your signature on the application form, or
    • an officially certified copy of the front and back of your valid identity card or passport, or
    • electronic authentication with eID when applying online.

Notice:
An official certification can be issued by a government agency. This can be, for example, city, county or municipal authorities.
When applying on site, you must present:

  • valid identity card or passport
