Biosphere reserves are valuable cultural and natural landscapes. They are model regions in which an economic and sustainable form of land use is to be developed and implemented together with the people who live and work here. This land use also serves to protect and maintain a livable environment and certain habitats for plants and animals. Biosphere reserves are also intended to serve research and educational purposes.

In order to meet all these objectives, they are divided into different zones according to the influence of human activity.

Biosphere reserves are legally binding areas which are to be protected and developed in a uniform manner and which

• cover a large area and are characteristic of certain types of landscape,
• meet the requirements of a nature conservation area in significant parts of their territory, and predominantly of a landscape conservation area in other parts,
• primarily serve the conservation, development or restoration of a landscape characterized by traditional diverse use and the diversity of species and biotopes that have historically grown within it, including wild and former cultivated forms of commercially used or usable animal and plant species, and
• serve as an example for the development and testing of management methods that are particularly gentle on natural resources.

The objectives of the biosphere reserve go far beyond the protection of nature. It is intended to open up opportunities for a new coexistence between man and nature as well as prospects for sustainable development in the region.
